In real life

Lightning and thunder

Lightning is a giant spark of electricity. It goes between clouds, through the air or all the way to the ground. [1]

Lightning heats the air all at once, much hotter than the surface of the Sun. The air then spreads out very fast: that's what makes the sound of thunder. [1]

Count the seconds between the lightning and the thunder, then divide by 3: now you know roughly how many kilometers away the lightning is. [1]

When you hear thunder, go inside a house or a car with a roof. Wait half an hour after the last thunder before going back outside. [2]
