In real life

Real auroras and real ice

Auroras come from the Sun. During a solar storm, tiny particles arrive near the Earth and get trapped by its magnetic field. [1]

Above the poles, these particles hit the air, which lights up: oxygen gives green and red, nitrogen gives blue and purple. [1]

Near the North Pole, it's called the aurora borealis, or northern lights. Near the South Pole, the aurora australis, or southern lights. [1]

Two huge sheets of ice cover Greenland and Antarctica. In Antarctica, the ice is almost 4.9 kilometers thick at its thickest point. [2]
