In real life

Real glowing mushrooms

In nature, some mushrooms glow in the dark. In 2020, scientists knew of 81 species. [1]

Their light is bluish green. It comes from a chemical reaction inside the mushroom. [2]

In Brazil, researchers studied a mushroom that only glows at night. They made fake mushrooms with a small light: they attracted more insects than the fake mushrooms that were switched off. [3]

Their idea: the light attracts insects, which carry the mushroom's spores a little farther away. [3]
